Showcasing Creativity and Sustainability at Okota Senior High School
After eight weeks of creativity, teamwork, and innovation, the Trash to Art Project at Okota Senior High came to a colorful close.
The closeout ceremony, held on the 23rd July 2025, featured two memorable parts: a public exhibition of the students’ artworks and the presentation of certificates and gifts to celebrate their efforts.
Art Exhibition
The exhibition was the highlight of the event, as students proudly showcased the art pieces they created from waste materials. Each group presented to school authorities, facilitators, and classmates, explaining how the project encouraged student creativity while promoting sustainability.
1st Group – Plastic Diamonds “When Love Found Her”
This piece was inspired by the story of a girl facing discrimination and rejection. The art depicted her lonely life without love, contrasted with a radiant center showing the transformation when love entered her life. The group creatively used discarded plastics to bring this emotional story to life.
2nd Group – Green Teens “Flower Vase and Keys to Excelling”
Using plastic bottles, empty biro inks, and bottle covers, this group designed a stunning vase of flowers. Each element had meaning. The biro inks as stems, the bottle covers as petals, and the colors represent unity and diversity.
3rd Group – Beauty of Trash “The Gutter Village”
A miniature village scene was crafted from biscuit wrappers, discarded papers, and bottle covers. The piece symbolized everyday community life, proving that even waste can be transformed into beauty and storytelling.
4th Group – Achievers “The Butterfly”
Inspired by the butterfly’s journey of transformation, this group designed a vibrant butterfly using biscuit nylon wrappers. The art symbolized beauty, freedom, and growth, reflecting the students’ own creative journey.
5th Group – Great Teams “Wonders of Nature”
This piece depicted a tree and a sheep, celebrating the wonders of nature. The leaves of the tree were fashioned from green plastic bottles, creatively merging environmental awareness with artistic expression.
Gift and Certificate Presentation
To reward their hard work, creativity, and dedication, all participating students received certificates and gifts. Their smiles and excitement lit up the ceremony, marking not just the end of a project, but the beginning of a new mindset toward waste and sustainability.
The Trash to Art Project demonstrated how turning waste into creative art can inspire change, encourage sustainability, and empower young leaders.
With teamwork and imagination, the students of Okota Senior High have shown that waste is not the end but the beginning of something extraordinary.
