Building a Healthier Nigeria: A Path to SDG 3 and Well-Being for All

Imagine a world where everyone, from young children to the elderly, wakes up full of energy, free from disease, and ready to pursue their dreams. Sounds ideal, right?

Unfortunately, for millions of people, especially in Nigeria, this is far from reality. But for this vision to become reality, ensuring good health for all is essential. This is the goal of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for everyone, at every age.

What is SDG 3?

SDG 3 (Good health and well-being) is one of the 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations to create a better world by 2030.

This goal focuses on improving global health by reducing diseases, increasing access to healthcare, and promoting healthier lifestyles. It covers a wide range of issues, including maternal health, child mortality, combating infectious diseases, and ensuring mental well-being and ensure that everyone, no matter their location or income level, can access quality healthcare.

Why is this so important to you and I? Without good health, achieving other goals like education, employment, and economic growth becomes nearly impossible cause individuals cannot work, learn and contribute meaningfully to the society.

Why is Good Health Vital?

Good health is the foundation of a productive and fulfilling life. A healthy population means fewer days lost to illness, more children in school, and more workers contributing to the economy.

For families, good health ensures parents can work and provide, while children grow strong and achieve their potential. In Nigeria, where nearly half of the population is under 18 years old, good health is not just about individual well-being but about building a prosperous future for the nation.

Steps to Achieving a Healthier Nigeria

However despite these daunting challenges, achieving good health for all Nigerians is still very possible. Here’s how we all can work towards this:

1. Adopt Healthy Lifestyles

Reduce the consumption of processed foods and sugary drinks. Opt for fresh fruits, vegetables, and traditional home-cooked meals. Encourage regular exercise, even simple activities like walking, dancing or skipping.

2. Personal Responsibility

We should recognize the importance of exercise, clean and portable water, and personal hygiene. Going for regular health check-ups to detect and treat illnesses early should be our new lifestyle.

3. Raise Awareness

Educate communities about the importance of maternal care and child vaccinations. Advocate for mental health awareness and support programs.

4. Prevent Diseases

In addition, parents should pay attention to immunization programs and schedules to protect their children from preventable illnesses. Regular use of mosquito nets and malaria treatments in high-risk areas.

Nevertheless, despite the challenges progress is super possible. Initiatives like the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) are expanding access to healthcare in underserved areas. Communities are increasingly aware of the importance of nutrition and hygiene. Young Nigerians are stepping up with innovative solutions, from health tech apps to grassroots campaigns.

If governments, communities, and individuals work together, we can overcome these challenges and create a healthier, stronger Nigeria where good health is the norm, not the exception.

Good health is everyone’s responsibility. Start today by choosing fresh, wholesome meals, exercising regularly, and supporting local health initiatives. Advocate for better healthcare policies in your community. By prioritizing health, we create a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria, where everyone can live a fulfilling life.

Good health matters—for you, for your family, and for the future of Nigeria. Let’s make it a reality!
